In this article, scientists modified the bacterium's DNA to incorporate six "letters" (which references the code for the blueprint of all forms of life) rather than the four found in nature. They knew they were able to do this with the E. coli bug but it was too slow to grow. They were unclear whether it would work with other lifeforms, and they finally did it with bacterium, modifying it for a genetic code of six letters. This could be a huge leap for humanity as we could alter our DNA to cure specific diseases and to extend our life expectancy.
