The microscope was invented by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in the 17th century. Antonie was not a scientist, he was actually a business man who created the microscope to look at cloth that he was purchasing to make sure there was no flaws in it. When he found out he could see very small things under the microscope, he used it to look at blood cells and amoebas which is why he is considered the father of microbiology. Using his microscope,  Dr. Robert Koch discovered germs that developed into dangerous diseases such as TB and cholera and saved lives.  The electron microscope was invented in the 1930's and was a great improvement to the world of microscopes as it allowed scientists to see the hydrogen atom and viruses.   Over time the microscope keeps getting better and better. Today, there is a big demand for the microscopes all across the world. They bring in a whopping eight billion dollars a year and are the "window into the invisibly small" and are important to our well being.
