Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has just announced that Canada will ban single use plastics as early as 2021, a similar proposal to that of the European Union. I believe that this new legislation will be a massive benefit to keeping our Earth clean and more specifically reduce ocean waste, since we as Canadians only recycle about 10% of the plastic we use (as stated in the article). In May, the United nations has said that 180 countries have come to an agreement to reduce the plastic waste in order to help benefit and save marine life in the oceans. It is still not set which plastics Canada will decide to ban but will be along the lines of: plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates, and stir sticks. I believe that by banning these products it will make the clean up mission in the ocean to move a lot quicker, and we may be able to see an increase in some marine life that has suffered previously to plastic waste.
I agree! This ban will not only benefit marine life and the environment, but it will also spread awareness and encourage people to dispose of their plastic wastes appropriately. As a result, hopefully more countries will follow in the footsteps of the Canadian PM and ban single use plastics in order to reduce damage to marine life and the environment.
