Return to the moon - SuhaanaSaini - 03-29-2019

US Vice president, Mike Pence says he wants US astronauts on the moon within the next 5 years. He says "Just as the United States was the first nation to reach the Moon in the 20th Century, so too, we will be the first nation to return astronauts to the Moon in the 21st Century". Nasa will be targeting the lunar south pole in which they will face many challenges such as cold traps which are ice water deposits that have collected from meteoroids and comets. The ice water reserves will be turned to use for fuel in the spacecraft. I believe this is a huge step for the states as space exploration is important in our understanding of the universe as well as our ability to advance the technology we currently have. The timeline he has provided will most likely be a major conflict and might be needing to be stretched because of factors such as the need for heavy-lift rockets that can withstand the massive hardware required for lunar landing and journey.  I am glad that there will be funding in the states going towards advancement in our knowledge of sciences although it is a costly venture.

RE: Return to the moon - Sarah Zaffino - 03-30-2019

Although sending a man to the moon is a big accomplishment, is Mike Pence doing it for the right reasons? It seems like his motives behind it are corrupt. He wants the world to know what the States are capable of. That they are the powerhouse of the world with the most advanced system capable of sending a United States citizen to the moon for the second time. His manipulative nature and tendencies that are demonstrated through the politics and time in office make an appearance when "Pence threatened to use commercial launch systems or to look to other partners if Nasa is not ready in time." Pence also says "[The] next giant leap is to return American astronauts to the Moon within the next five years by any means necessary, and to establish a permanent presence on the Moon and prepare to put American astronauts on Mars." When he says by any means necessary, it is interpreted with a negative connotation that he is willing to spend any amount of money to ensure that the States make it to the moon for the second time, first. Even though there is a plethora of diverse conflicts and foundations that require higher fiscal aid. For example, opposed to trying to prove a point, this money could be poured into cancer research or solving world poverty and famine. Overall, Pence, along with the support of the Trump administration is creating a competitive and hostile political climate while doing what they do best, acting in the best interest of themselves and the records they can break while seemingly ignoring the dire need of their citizens.
