The article is discussing the relatively new satellite that was launched in September 2018. It is mapping out Antarctica and Greenland as well as tracking the depth of the water/ice in the northern sea. It replaced another satellite, improving the depth/thickness it can see through, it useful to have this satellite because it alerts us the depth of the ice. It also has improved the initial maps we had, but the laser doesn't work on the open ocean because it is too deep to see, they use this laser aswell to track how tall are some trees. In the end, it's essential to know how much ice is left and how many trees are "adults" and how many are childlike trees, to understand how far climate change has gone.
