Plastic pollution: One town smothered by 17,000 tonnes of rubbish

Recently, one small town in Malaysia has suffered greatly after the discovery of 17 000 tonnes (17 000 000 kg) of waste, and the illegal factories that dispose of it. From 2017 until 2018 Malaysia noticed a 200 000 tonne increase in in imported plastic and rubber waste. Because of this massive increase, there needed to be another way- or at least an increase of waste-disposing technology. However, creating more recycling plants that could properly deal with the wastes would be expensive, as well as sending the non-recyclable plastics to waste Centers. So many illegal recycling plants chose to dispose of the waste in a free but unsanitary way, and that method was to burn it. This resulted in many citizens to notice an unpleasant aroma in the air, which then caused severe heath problems to them. Some of the symptoms that they displayed from these carcinogens were a rash and sleeping difficulties. This issue of waste management over the world continues to become problematic  as a result of the huge flaw in the plastic recycling system mainly to do with the expensive cost that comes with it.

Hearing about companies choosing to irresponsibly dump waste like this is very worrying. It's disappointing to think that we live in a society where people would cause extreme problems for others just to save some money. In addition the effects that this kind of dumping will have on the environment will definitely be incredibly damaging. The people responsible for this aren't thinking about the long run, and are only looking for a quick fix. Hopefully soon people will realize that the well being of others, as well as the Earth, is worth spending some extra money.
