A study about the Green Space Index completed by the charity Fields in Trust found that more than 2.5 million people in Great Britain live further than a 10 minute walk from any open green space. Furthermore, they state that each person's average amount of green space is less than half of a six yard box on a football pitch. This lack of green space is unfortunate since a lot of research links access to green space to personal well being. As there are no rules in place for the protection of green space in Great Britain, only about 6% of parkland is protected. The value of the health benefits from being outdoors for exercise or a person's mental state should be a warning to urban areas that protected green areas are important and should be a priority. In Canada, we are very fortunate to have a large amount of green space in our cities and according to Statistics Canada, in the 2017 Census, 86% of people in metropolitan areas visited a park or green space and only 10% did not have a park that was close to home. I can't imagine living in an area where we did not have access to green space and hopefully other regions protect what spaces they have.
