Temperature Maps from Space would Boost Crop Production

As an addition to the Union's growing number of satellites called Sentinels, the EU's Earth Observation Program Copernicus is a satellite system that will record the temperatures of individual fields of crops.  The satellites will survey land temperatures to determine the use of water by plants and show how the waters goes back into the atmosphere.  This information will also show how plants respond to drought and how much water is available to grow crops. A team lead by Professor Martin Wootser of King's College London states that the "main goal is to benefit agriculture and increase crop production".  This research is part of a satellite program called Land Surface Temperature Monitoring (LSTM) which through increased precision makes the information it collects more useful to agriculture.  The data can also be used to predict drought conditions which would allow producers to determine if they want to continue with putting the crops in and using fertilizers and other inputs that may not generate successful crops. This satellite information is part of the ever growing industry of technology in agriculture and continues to help producers boost their yields.
